First-grade teacher Maggie Hawk of Yellow Springs Elementary in Frederick, Maryland, got the surprise of her career when Lori and Mike Milken announced that she was being recognized with a Milken Educator Award. Mike noted that Hawk, who struggled with learning issues growing up, now helps students with severe disabilities overcome their own challenges to make significant progress in the classroom. The Milken Family Foundation has awarded thousands of Educator Awards to public-school educators like Hawk across America; each award includes a $25,000 award and an invitation to the annual Milken Educator Forum.
