In 2004, Fortune magazine ran a cover story about Mike under the headline "The Man Who Changed Medicine." Exactly a decade later, Mike shared a cover with other noted education philanthropists in a Forbes magazine "Special Philanthropy Issue" that called them "BEST IN CLASS - The Visionaries Reimagining Our Children's Future."

An inside spread on "Formulas for Success" profiled "Six of America's Most Influential Education Philanthropists." Among the programs mentioned adjacent to a full-page photo of Mike were the Milken Scholars, the Milken Educator Awards and Mike's Math Club. Forbes said:

"Think decades, not years. Milken Scholars get broad financial support and mentoring through college and grad school, even into the early years of their careers. Milken has been working on education for almost 40 years and estimates he has given away approximately $500 million. His primary focus? Quality of teaching."

Mike's educational philanthropy was formalized with establishment of the Milken Family Foundation in 1982 and has also included initiatives in education technology and professional competency assessment. Separately, Mike's organizations have also provided more than $650 million for a wide range of initiatives in medical research and public health.
