Mike conferred with Jonathan Simons, M.D., at the PCF's 11th annual Scientific Retreat. Simons, the director of the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University (and soon to be named PCF president and CEO) in Atlanta, was coordinating a $10 million grant from the Department of Defense, the largest-ever three-year grant for prostate cancer research. Simons credits early PCF grants with providing a "fulcrum effect" that sparked interest in prostate cancer research. "Every single person on this grant has received PCF funding in the past," Simons said in A Call to Action. "If you took all the PCF awards starting back in 1993, and looked downstream at all the government funding that grew from it — add it all up and I bet the return on investment would be pretty amazing."
