Ahmed Zewail, California Institute of Technology, won the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering investigation of fundamental chemical reactions, using ultra-short laser flashes, on the time scale on which the reactions actually occur. His current research focuses on dynamical chemistry and biology with an emphasis on the physics of elementary processes in complex systems.
