Robert Fogel, Columbia University, won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1999 studies documenting the secular decline in mortality and the changing pattern of aging over the life cycle in the U.S. Other research has focused on the high-performing Asian economies; nutrition and longevity; an assessment of 20th century historical debates over American slavery; and historical discipline of economics in the 20th century.
