"Where Mike Speaks"

Mike and his brother, Lowell, formalized their previous philanthropic efforts in 1982 with the establishment of the Milken Family Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is to discover and advance inventive and effective ways of helping people help themselves and those around them to lead productive and satisfying lives. The practical focus of the Foundation includes support for various educational, medical and community programs, including:
  • Milken National Educator Awards;
  • Teacher Advancement Program (TAP);
  • Milken Scholars Program;
  • Jewish Educator Awards;
  • The Prostate Cancer Foundation (formerly CaP CURE);
  • Epilepsy Research Award, Grant and Fellowship Program;
  • Medical grants to other organizations;
  • Festival for Youth;
  • Mike's Math Club;
  • Milken Archive of American Jewish Music; and
  • The Milken Institute

Mike surprised 3rd-grade teacher Cheryl DiMartino (left) at C.P. Squires Elementary in Las Vegas by presenting her with a 2002 Milken National Educator Award. DiMartino teaches the lowest-achieving students in her inner-city school, and has helped 90% of them to raise their reading skills two to four grade levels within one year. Mike (right) shares the simple joy of blowing bubbles with a youngster at a Festival for Youth celebration.

The H.E.L.P. Group

In Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley, the H.E.L.P. Group is California's largest private institution serving children with special needs. Mike has taught classes and worked with kids there for 15 years.
